Face Your Fears

This week I've had a few opportunities to face my fears and do things that scare me, and these experiences have reminded me of some important lessons I've learned from some amazing people that I want to record and write about. First, my first mission president, President M. Tim Welch taught us the importance of facing our fears in becoming effective disciples of Christ. We will always be faced with fear when we are going to do something that will improve our life or that of someone else, specifically in a spiritual sense. Satan wants to stunt our growth, and the natural man hates change and wants comfort. So, we have two forces fighting against us when trying to be better. But, does that mean we should not make that change? NO! It means we need to charge at it full force and let the Lord work miracles in our lives! As Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said in the October 2020 General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we can't expect to become like God by living a life of "comfortable Christianity". Finally, my mom taught me something that will help me in overcoming fear throughout my life on a more secular level as well as a spiritual one. We were on our way to my new home that I'm moving to this week, and I was excited, but nervous to sign my lease and hand over a good chunk of change like this. This is my first time ever paying rent or living on my own other than my mission. I told my mom that this was the first time I had really felt nervous in quite a while, and she said "Your dreams should both excited you and terrify you. That's how you know they are going to make you learn and grow." That hit me hard, and it gave me the courage I needed to sign those papers and hand over the money. I know this won't be the last time that I have to face my fears in order to further my dreams, but I was reminded by my experiences, that fear is an indicator of impending growth, so go get it! Don't let fear dissuade you from achieving your potential! Trust that the Lord won't let you fail so badly that your life is completely destroyed. Everything will be fine in the end, so go get you dreams!
