A Life of Meaning

This week, as part of the study material, I watched a video entitled "A Hero's Journey" which was a devotional given at Brigham Young University-Idaho by Jeff Sandefer. I learned many important lessons from this devotional, but the thing that stood out to me the most was the importance of making our lives meaningful. The details of what we actually do in life really aren't all that important in the long term. I could be a professional athlete, an entrepreneur, a grocery store clerk, or whatever else I could possibly think of. The details don't matter. What matters is that I love what I do, and it gives meaning to my life. As a result of this point made by Sandefer, I have pondered what things would give my life meaning. I have realized even more that my biggest focuses in life are my church and my God, my family, and my personal improvement. Luckily for me, I can fit those priorities into almost any field of study and any career. My challenge will be using whatever talents I have and the skills I develop not only to improve my life, but to benefit my church and my family. Ultimately, I know I want to be capable of serving in my church whenever and wherever the Lord needs me, and I want to be able to spend time with my family. So, to make my life meaningful, I need to focus my self improvement on areas where those other priorities will benefit. For example, I want to save up enough money to be able to serve a senior mission with my future wife after we have raised our kids. This goal will give meaning to my work, even on days where I struggle to see the point of my hard work, or when I feel I have failed. I truly believe that my life will be meaningful if I focus on those goals I have for my life, and the details of how to achieve that will fall into place as I continue trusting in God and working as hard as I can.
